Keep it simple

To meet the requirements for treatment/management of ballast water set out in Regulation D1 of the International Convention for the Control of Ships Ballast Water and Sediment (the BWM Convention), all kinds of techniques have been and are being developed at this moment.
Winteb encountered one of these techniques during a visit to one of the shipyards using Winteb Air Pipe Heads.
The yard was using a steel T-piece construction underneath our WIN2000 Air Pipe Head.
One end of the T-piece was fitted to the air pipe coming out of the deck, one was fitted with a blind flange and on the last one a WIN2000 Air Pipe Head was fitted. See drawing.

To us this seemed a large and heavy construction.
Continuously flushing ballast water through Air Pipe Heads is not allowed by the classification societies.
The construction was designed to avoid flushing through the Air Pipe Head causing possible damage to Air Pipe Heads in general.
This is supposed to be achieved by taking off the blind flange before the ship starts to pump the ballast water through this construction. The idea was that the ballast water would go through the side opening of the T-piece. As one can see most of the ballast water would still go in an upwards direction and through the Air Pipe Head. Not to mention all the flanges that need to be taken off and fitted back on again.
Furthermore it had to bring better flow rates due to the ballast water flushing through the side opening.

The Solution

We took a good look at  the T-piece construction and knew there could be a simpler solution. We combined the T-piece construction with the closable execution of our Air Pipe Heads and developed the WIN2000 Ballast Water Management design.
It allows the ship owner to meet the requirements of Regulation D1 by continuously flushing ballast water through the Air Pipe Heads.
Our WIN2000BWM Air Pipe Head flushes through a side opening, leaving the ball chamber with the float ball and O-ring sealing protected from possible damage, and is therefore already type approved by Germanischer Lloyd.
